Project Details

The project aims at an online module of Virtual Field Trip Gallery for Geotechnical Engineering, covering the most fundamental and significant geotechnical engineering concepts covered in CEE4405 (Geotechnical Engineering), CEE4430 (Environmental Geotechnics), and CEE6447 (Ground Modification). This online module will develop an integrated teaching approach that incorporates lectures, laboratory experiments, and virtual field trips, allowing students to actively establish a clear vision about their future endeavors in civil engineering, especially in geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering. The final deliverables are two photo galleries and three video galleries, which will be integrated into the future geotechnical engineering curriculum at Georgia Tech, to connect students with real-world practitioners.

Photo gallery 1: EBB retaining wall construction

This is a “virtual tour” that shows the role and construction of a soldier pile and lagging wall in the construction sequence of a building called the Krone Engineered Biosystems Building (EBB) at the Georgia Tech Campus. The photos were taken by Dr. David Frost.

Photo gallery 2: Field trips from geotechnical classes

This module contains three sets of field trip photos provided by Dr. Susan Burns.

  1. Bolton Landfill
  2. Biomass Plant
  3. Brick Manufacturing Plant

Video gallery 1: Decatur Housing project

This thirty-six-minute-long video was filmed with the help of Mr. Michael Morello on aggregate piers.

Video gallery 2: 10th Spring project

This fourth-four-minute-long video was filmed with the help of Mr. Zachary Williams on soldier piles, lagging, soil nails, and micro piles.

Video gallery 3: High Street project

This nineteen-minute-long video was filmed with the help of Mr. John Wolosick on Vibro (aggregate) piers.

Instructions: Students may access this through the Georgia Tech BOLD website. With permission from Mr. John Wolosick, the materials are currently made for students enrolled at Georgia Tech. These should not be distributed through other resources as of now. Keller North America, Dr. Susan Burns, and Dr. David Frost reserve the copyright of the photos and videos provided.
